My trip to Kataragama and Castlereigh

ByDayan Samarasinghe (Grade 5),S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia

I went to Kataragama on April 18, this year. I went with my parents and grandmother. On our way we saw the Kushtarajagala in Weligama and visited the Vishnu Dewalaya, Dondra head and the Dondra Lighthouse. Next we had lunch at Tangalle Rest House and proceeded to Kataragama. On our way we went to Tissamaharamaya. After resting at the hotel we went to Kiri Vehera and attended the Kataragama Maha Devala pooja. The next day we visited Sella Kataragama Ganadevi Kovil, Mahasena Temple and Lakshmi Devalaya. After lunch we went to Yala National Park. I saw a leopard, some elephants, a fox, deer, many birds, a crocodile and a Sambar deer.

The next day we went to Castlereigh. On our way we visited the Samanalawewa power house, reservoir and dam. We saw how the big turbines worked to generate electricity. We stayed at a beautiful bungalow in Castlereigh. The next day we visited Devon Falls, St. Claire’s Falls and Upper Kotmale Dam. I played monopoly with my family that evening.

The next day we visited Castlereigh dam and reservoir. After breakfast we left for Kandy. We worshipped the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and returned back home. I am thankful to my father for taking us on this

educational and enjoyable trip.

Our new Primary Headmistress is Mrs. Sriyani Thennakoon. She is very nice and kind.

Whenever she sees our articles and drawings in the paper, she gives her signed copy to us. So we are happy and encouraged more. I love my headmistress very much.

Barbie Dolls

ByNoor Rahma Fazmin (Grade 4),Ilma Int. Girls’ School

Barbie dolls are very famous all over the world. She first appeared in 1959. Barbie dolls are pretty, slim dolls with long hair. There are
different sized Barbie dolls.

A Barbie kit comes with lots of fashionable clothes, slippers and other accessories like hair brushes and jewellery. She also has her own house, cars, swimming pools and friends too. Ken, Stacie, Skipper and Katie are some of her friends.
Barbie has her own cartoons, movies and storybooks. ‘Barbie in the Nutcracker’, ‘Barbie and the Diamond Castle’ and ‘Mariposha’ are some of the movies she appears in.

Pictures of Barbie dolls appear on pencils, school bags, pencil-cases, stickers, posters and stationery.
I too, love Barbie dolls. My wish is that Barbie dolls would be true.

My favourite city in Sri Lanka

By Yenuka Liyanage,(Grade 6),Royal College

My favourite city is Kandy. It is in the Central Province of
Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful city in the hills. Kandy is the second
largest city in Sri Lanka. It was the capital of
Sri Lanka in the ancient times.

Kandy is famous for the Dalada Maligawa and the Dalada Perahera.
The Bogambara Wewa is a landmark in Kandy.

It was built by an ancient king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807. There are many more interesting places such as the Peradeniya Gardens, Udawatta Kele and big hotels. I like Kandy city very much.
