Unionist Anton Marcus elected to top world body

Anton Marcus, convener and General Secretary of the Free Trade Zones & General Services Employees’ Union (FTZ&GSEU) was recently elected to an international union body – the Industrial Global Union, the world’s largest industrial workers union with 50 million workers in 145 countries including Sri Lanka.

This came at the founding of this new global union front at a meeting in Copenhagen on June 18-20 attended by over 1400 union leaders across the world, including those from Sri Lanka. Mr Marcus was elected to the executive body of the union as a representative from the Asia Pacific, the FTZ&GSEU said in a media release.

The new front follows the merger of international unions representing textile, garments, leather, metal, energy and general services workers.Mr Marcus is a veteran in the trade union fighting for the rights of garment workers and allied categories, union officials said.
