My first day at Upper School

By Shadhaapthi Sridharan (12 years), Methodist College

My first day at Methodist College Upper School is still in my memory. It was on a bright Monday morning on January 5, 2010, that I first went to Upper School. My father took me to school. I was proud to wear my new uniform, shoes and bag.

My joy knew no bounds that my class teacher from Grade 5 took me and my classmates to the Upper School. There she handed us over to our class teachers and left. My friends were all separated. My class teacher was Mrs. B. Mendis. She was a young lady who always had a smile on her face.

Then we had assembly for one hour. Our principal and vice principal addressed us and told us the rules and regulations of the school. Then we went to our classrooms and talked and played with our friends.
By that time school finished and we went home. Now I’m used to the new environment.

The person I admire the most

By Binadi Almeida (Grade 3), Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda

The person I admire the most is the President of my country Sri Lanka His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa. President Rajapaksa is the fifth president of Sri Lanka. He will go down in history as the
president who managed to stop terrorism in Sri Lanka.

The war in Sri Lanka had gone on for thirty years. People in Sri Lanka now have the freedom of going about anywhere without any fear of bombs.

President Rajapaksa loves children. He has started a lot of development projects, keeping the future generation in mind. A lot of new highways, overhead bridges, sports facilities etc., have come up under his development projects. He is a brave and courageous leader. He is proud to be Sri Lankan and he proves it by wearing the national dress even when he travels overseas. Long live the president!

Autobiography of a car

By Afraah Marikkar (15 years), Ilma Int. Girls’ School

I am a Tata Indica car. I was born in a big factory in Pune. I was assembled by many mechanics and engineers. I am made of steel, iron, rubber, fiberglass and canvas.

I run on petrol. As soon as I was born, I was sent to a showroom with some other cars. Many people came to see me there. At last one person liked me and decided to take me home.

I felt really happy. My owner was a young executive. He took care of me and I was washed and cleaned every day before he took me to office. After a year, he was going abroad, so he decided to sell me.
My new owner was not kind. He was a very reckless and dangerous driver. I got bruised and scratched many times. As a result, I started looking old and ugly with many marks on my body.

My owner’s only concern was speed and he never cared about me. I was not serviced regularly and my body parts started making noises. One day, when he was drunk and driving very fast we had an accident. In the crash, my owner received multiple injuries.

I was also crushed very badly and my injuries were beyond repair. I was towed and parked outside his house. Now I stand there in the rain and shine. I have become rusty, sad and old. And I am not in running
condition any more.
