Matara people seek justice after police vehicle kills mother of two

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Matara town yesterday to protest over the death of a government medical lab assistant, who died on the spot after being hit by a speeding police vehicle at Kamburugama on Friday.

The protestors demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident, where the vehicle with a group of police officers, heading for special duty in Hambantota, hit the victim head-on, killing her on the spot.Witnesses said the police vehicle was on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred. Another pedestrian who was also seriously injured in the incident is in a critical condition at the Matara hospital.

Witnesses, also alleged that the vehicle sped from the scene soon after the accident and returned about 15 minutes later.

Police claim they left the scene because they feared their safety, but residents charged that the officers had unloaded several bottles of alcohol at the local police station, before returning to the scene of the accident.

The victim was identified as 32 year-old, Telesca Dilani, a mother of two attached to the Regional Blood Bank in Matara. The driver who has not been identified was produced before the local magistrate and remanded till Tuesday. The victim’s funeral will be held tomorrow.
