2008-11-05 17:25:45

The Sri Lanka housemaid Rizana Nafeek who is under a death sentence in Saudi Arabia for the alleged murder of a toddler has had her appeal postponed to January 3rd.

The case was postponed as the Indian translator involved in the case had not been present in Court when the case was taken up. The defence says the confession attributed to Ms.Nafeek has been misinterpreted due to the translator being of Indian origin and unable to understand the Tamil dialect that she spoke in.

Ms.Nafeek was sentenced to death last year by a Saudi Court for allegedly killing the toddler she was looking after but the defences say the child died accidentally.

The Asian Human Rights Commission is among donor organisations and individuals who have raised Rs4.5millionb for her defence which being handled by the Khatab –Al-Samiri law firm.
