Teachers sick note campaign 60 % successful, Trade Unions

At least 100,000 government school teachers reported sick today as part of their countrywide trade union action to resolve the salary alimony issue affecting them.

Teacher trade union leaders said that at an island wide level, they could put the success of the sick campaign at 60 percent.

The campaign was largely successful in outstation schools than in schools in Colombo, they said.

Few of the schools that closed down completely due to the absence of the teachers included the Kotahena Central School, Meegoda Maha Vidyalaya, Akuressa Malimbada North Vidyalaya and Siridhamma Vidyalaya, Galle.

At Royal College, Colombo 135 teachers out of 330 took part in the sick note campaign while 87 teachers out of 232 teachers of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo took part in the strike.
