Cool creation from Kurunegala inventor

By Gamini Mahadura

The red-earth fridge powered by water

A refrigerator sans electricity or any other power but merely working on water has been built by a youth living in Kurunegala. Hailing from the village of Tittawella, 31- year-old Sarath Kulatunga is the young inventor of this local fridge turned out of red earth (rathu meti) and shaped in a moulding machine.

He had mastered the art of turning out pots, pans and kitchen utensils from earth since the age of 5 and now with over 25 years of experience in this art, he has come up with this new invention.

The new invention which is about 150 lbs in weight has only taken two months for completion and can keep about 20 vegetable types fresh for about a week. Beef or fish too could be stored as it has deep freeze capability too.

Its water container can hold 15 litres which needs refilling once every 45 days. It is environmental friendly and Sarath hopes to market the fridge after effecting some improvements. It would cost around Rs. 10,000 and is complete with wheels for moving it.
