Living amidst flood waters and garbage

More than 100 families who received houses built by the Chinese Red Cross in Waragaswila, Pinwatta Hikkaduwa are facing hazards due to poor-quality building material and unsuitability of the housing locality Recipients complain that since the houses have been built in a hilly area during the rainy season the houses are flooded with muddy water.

They also say that the walls have started cracking and the doors and window frames that have been built with inferior wood cannot be closed properly.“We have proposed that a proper drainage system be built,” K.P.Chandrawathi Silva an inmate said. Garbage has also become a problem with residents being forced to dump their garbage on the roadside. People also complained that due to ill lit streets women in particular have fallen prey to chain snatchers.
