Trinity still not consistent

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Trinity, though fielding seven players from last year's side, have not made a significant impact in their five third term games. They had two rain-interrupted no decisions against Nalanda and De Mazenod, lost on first innings to Ananda and St Anne's, and suffered a bad defeat at the hands of the Peterites.

Dilan Gangoda

Dilan Gangoda carries a triple responsibility as skipper, stumper and opening bat - as he frankly puts it the performances so far "could have been better". When the middle order fails to click he says and adds that the team tends to suffer a collapse after a promising start. Though not making gigantic contributions, Gangoda has been among the runs. It seems as though he is just one innings away from a big knock. He backs himself to do both jobs - keeping and opening - well.

Trinity is fortunate to have the services of Sri Lanka's under 19 captain Sachith Pathirana, possibly the schoolboy with the greatest amount of experience and exposure. Pathirana, who is in his final year, would like to go out with a bang. The cloud on the horizon is that his availability may be curtailed by his under 19 commitments. That Trinity are only half the team without him was proved last season when they suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Kegalu Vidyalaya. At the same time, Trinity has to get used to life after Pathirana.

Left handed opener Wasika Munasinghe has been very impressive this season. Munasinghe, who has good temperament, was unfortunate to fall short of a hundred by one run in the Ananda match. He was also like the boy on the burning deck when he stood firm and made 32 against St. Peters. He is one of the tough nuts opponents will have to crack.

Hard-hitting bat and off spinner Romesh Perera has not really delivered the goods this season. The same applies to diminutive Roshan Jabel. The latter is a very agile fielder. Hasitha Ilangaratne the well-built paceman, has been injury-prone and Trinity is hoping that he will be fit for the games ahead. Left armer Rajitha Bandara will open the bowling with Ilangaratne The Trinity camp is hoping that Akila Jayasundera, a right arm leggie, will come good. Chamath Umadantha is another leggie. Kitmal Wimalaweera, Mohamed Sajid and Dushal Ranasinghe will have to come up with good contributions. Keheliya Atugoda is a right arm medium pacie as is Mohamed Shehan.

H.M. Muthalib who coached for around seven years called it a day and Darrel Wimalaratne has taken over, Wimalaratne's credentials are good. He captained St. Peter's at Cricket and Rugger and went on to play for CCC. At club level he concentrated more on rugby, turning out for the CH & FC as a fly half and for Sri Lanka as a centre. Amiable Gamini Dissanaike is the efficient Master in charge.
