Plea for help

By R. S. Keeriyawatta

A 27 year old youth in Gampola has been struck by tragedy twice restricting him to a small room and hopes for his life dashed. Dhammika, hailing from the village of Naranvita in Doluwa, Gampola suffered an early set back in life when he lost his father at a very small age and since then his mother K.G. Margaret had been battling on to educate him.

Dhammila studied till Grade 11 and his mother did everything possible to bring up her son. When it was time for Dhammika to provide for his mother he had no alternative but to do odd jobs. December 10, 2003 was a decisive date for him. On that day he fell from a branch of a tree he was felling and had to be admitted to Gampola hospital and thereafter for further treatment at Maharagama.

The second tragedy struck him when he was going through some physical exercise. He had a fall and thereafter could not make use of his feet. Today he is confined to a sick room and has to depend on his aged mother who is destitute herself. He has been lifeless below the hip for the last three years. When this correspondent met the mother she related the sad story of the family. Mother and son are both concerned about each other’s fate. The little money doled out by the Divisional Secretariat is hardly enough for a day, she said.

Society needs to help such cases as Dhammika’s and those wanting to help the mother and son can send their remittances to Account no. 10630 of K. G. Margaret at the Naranwita Cooperative Rural Bank.
