Tunnel sits pretty, while people live on the edge

Although the construction of a tunnel on the Kandy- Nuwara Eliya main road, bypassing the Ramboda Pass, has been completed, it is not yet in use, while the existing dilapidated narrow road is proving to be treacherous to motorists and pedestrians.

The tunnel project director M. Thuresami said they had informed the Highways and Road Development Ministry about two weeks ago that the tunnel was ready for public use and it was up to the Ministry to declare it open.

However, The Sunday Times learns that a date had not been fixed yet as the Ministry was apparently still planning a ceremony for the official opening.

While officials make plans for an opening ceremony, people are forced to use the road that has been neglected for some months and these pictures speak for themselves.
