George Steuarts wins three silver awards

George Steuart (Teas & Marketing) (Pvt) Ltd and George Steuarts Recruitment (Pvt) Ltd) secured three silver awards at the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka Awards Nite held recently.

The companies are part of the George Steuarts Group, Sri Lanka’s oldest business house established in 1835.

George Steuart (Teas & Marketing) (Pvt) had earlier won awards in 2004 and 2005, for exports in Value Added and Bulk Teas. Group Chairman, S Skandakumar, said that George Steuarts’ association with the tea industry began from its very inception when James Taylor pioneered the planting of tea in 1867. He added that, following the destruction of the Coffee industry in the early 1860’s, George Steuarts financed the transition into tea and managed some of the finest plantations, from then until 1975, when they were nationalized. The Board consists of Group Chairman, S Skandakumar, Group Deputy Chairman/Managing Director, J. M. Wimalagooneratne, Group Finance Director, D. N. Daluwatte, Group Business Development Director, D. P. Kanagaratnam, Managing Director, D. Pathmanathan, Directors, W. P. Hapuarachchi and M. T. Ratwatte.

George Steuarts Recruitment (Pvt) Ltd created history by becoming the first recruitment agency to be nominated for an Export Award by the National Chamber of Exports of Sri Lanka and received this recognition for services in the Business and Professional Category.

Initiated in 1986, the company’s manpower recruitment business has grown over the two decades and the award reflects both the professionalism and quality of personnel sent overseas to principals of good standing.
