The melody of Mr. Holland’s Opus

Glenn Holland

An emotioanl drama of a teacher who belatedly discovers the significance of his contribution to society in the profession of educating younger ones, ‘Mr. Holland's Opus’ will be screened on September 18 at the American Centre, Colombo-3.

Glenn Holland (Richard Dreyfuss) is a man who has a deep love of music, and a desire to compose one memorable piece of music to leave his mark on the world. However, playing piano in cocktail lounges while he works on his own compositions doesn't pay the bills, so in 1965, he reluctantly accepts a job as a high school music teacher, teaching a class on Music Appreciation.

Over the next 30 years, Holland teaches a great deal about music and life to the thousands of kids who pass through his hands and the bands he directs. However, his commitment to his profession pulls him farther away from his family, and leaves him with no time to work on his "American Symphony".

Playing the lead, Richard Dreyfuss was nominated for his performance at both Academy Award and Golden Globe in 1996. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Glenn Headly, Olympia Dukakis, William H. Macy and Terrence Howard, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' is directed by Stephen Herek.
