A mega gas filling complex is to be built in close proximity to the port of Galle by Laugfs Gas Company Limited with an investment of one billion rupees. The project will be implemented in collaboration with Sri Lanka Southern Development Authority with a view to increase the company’s LPG refilling capacity. This will be a new fully facility cylinder filling facility. The entire operation is controlled by a computer system which ensures accurate quantity and consistency. Hence, customers will be ensured with correct quantity of gas for the price they are paying. The quality control system will make sure safer cylinders to consumers whilst reducing the cycle time and the operating cost, company officials said.

A five acre block of land at Kurunduwatte in Akmeemana has been earmarked to build the gas filling complex. A gas filling station, stores complex a factory to repair LP gas cylinders and a distribution centre of LPG cylinders will also be built at the site. Chairman of Laugfs Group W.K.H Wegapitiya said that LPG storage and filling plant in Galle will improve filling efficiencies providing better customer satisfaction.

Stocks of gas are to be brought to the port of Galle from ships and it will be pumped to the gas filling complex through a pipe line. At present stocks of gas are being transported from the port of Colombo to the South resulting in the company incurring a heavy transport cost. Wegapitiya disclosed that around 300 direct and indirect employment opportunities will be created with the implementation of the project. The production process will commence within six months. The relevant memorandum of understanding was signed recently by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Southern Development Authority Ranjith Gunasekera and Wegapitiya.
