Stamp to honour 50th anniversary of Buddhist mission to Germany

To commemorate 50 years of the first Sri Lankan Buddhist Mission to Germany (1957-2007) a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover was issued by the Government Philatelic Bureau at the Savsiripaya auditorium on August 22.

The first mission was sponsored by the German Dharmaduta Society. The picture on the stamp depicts the Sri Lankan Buddhist Mission handing over the gift of the Dhamma in the form of a Sannasa (parchment scroll)to a delegation of Germans in front of the Das Buddhistische Haus (Berlin Vihara)in Berlin - Frohnau in 1957. The stamp was designed by Nihal Sangabo Dias.

The first day cover carries a sketch of the members of the first Buddhist mission to Germany. This too was designed by Nihal Sangabo Dias.
