Taliban say they killed 2 Germans

Afghan Taliban rebels said they had killed two German hostages today, but an Afghan Foreign Ministry official said one of the Germans was still alive and the other had died of a heart attack. A Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf also said the militants would start killing the 23 Korean hostages they held if South Korea did not withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and the Afghan government did not release Taliban prisoners.

 
Last Potter vanishes in sales magic

The last book in the Harry Potter series flew off bookshop shelves, in some places at 15 per second, as fans worldwide Saturday rushed to find out whether author J.K. Rowling slays or spares the boy wizard. After months of hype and hearsay, “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows”, the seventh volume in a decade-long magical saga, went on sale globally at 2301 GMT in most countries, with London the focus of festivities.

 
India set for first female president
India got its first female president today as lawmakers elected Pratibha Patil in what was billed as a historic step forward for women. The 72-year-old lawyer cruised to a landslide win over incumbent 84-year-old Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the largely ceremonial post of head of state of the world's largest democracy.“I am grateful to the voters...
