Thora too hot for Ananda

By Shon De Fry

S.Thomas’ College cruised through to a comfortable victory in their Inter School Rugby encounter against Ananda College yesterday at the CR & FC Grounds. At the final whistle the score read - S. Thomas’ College 29 points ( 3 goals, 1 try and 1 penalty) to 11 points ( 1 try, 2 penalties).

S. Thomas’ got in to the driving seat in the first half of the match with Manjith Thamanigama kicking them in to the lead by putting over a penalty. S. Thomas’ further consolidated their lead in the fifteenth minute when a very innovative move that was started by Manjith Thamanigama was finished off by Harshana Mendis going over for a try which was converted by Thamanigama. The boys from Mount Lavinia had more possession of the ball and seemed to have some very impressive play. With Heshan Goonarathna going over for another try in the thirtieth minute, S. Thomas’ stood strong at the end of the first half. They led by 15 points to nil.

The second half started with Ananda College joining the party all iced-up by scoring two penalties courtesy Shoshira Jayasinghe, and then Ashan Madushanka pushing forward to plant a try cutting down the lead the Thomians were enjoying to just four points.

But the visitors woke up from their slumber, pulled up their socks and hit back, with just minutes before the final whistle to score two consecutive tries. Heshan Goonarathna touched down on both occasions. And both the tries were converted by the boots of Manjith Thamanigama.

Referee – Priyantha Gunerathna.
