Judge rejects OIC’s medical certificate

The medical certificate of the Talatuoya Police OIC, on whom a warrant had been ordered by the High Court, was rejected by Central Province High Court Judge D.S.C. Lekamwasam when it was presented by a junior policeman.

The High Court Judge said there seemed to be something fishy and re-ordered the warrant for return and inquiry on June 8. Earlier the judge had issued a warrant on the OIC for not attending the High Court over the matter of an absconding accused in a case of highway robbery of a vehicle.

The case was that of highway robbery of a vehicle on 06.04.2004 at Talatuoya by three accused. Two of the accused were present in Court on a previous date, but the third accused G.G.Buddhadasa was not present.

He had been arrested and given bail but he had not been present in court on the next date. In this case, Wijaya Wickramaratne PC with attorney Nimal Suraweera appeared for the first and second accused. The main case is to be called on October 31, 2007.

Alleged killer in court

A man who is alleged to have stabbed two persons to death and injured four others, was produced before the Kandy Additional Magistrate Ms.Jayakee de Alwis by the Balagolla Police.The four persons are warded in the Intensive Care Unit at the Kandy General and Teaching Hospital.

The suspect Thevaraja Yogaratnam alias Yoga is alleged to be a habitual drug addict, police said. The suspect's father is alleged to have died of stab injuries sometime ago while the mother was abroad.

Police said the man turned violent when they tried to arrest him, but they recovered a knife from him. Inspector D. Chandarapla is conducting further inquiries into the incident. The suspect has been remanded until June 8.

Accused policemen granted bail

Assistant Superintendent of Police Kulasiri Udugampola (now under interdiction) and Sub Inspector Lal Hemasinghe were granted bail by Kandy High Court Judge D.S.C.Lekamwasam after they were indicted for alleged illegal confinement and causing the death of Sumithra Sanjeewa Sirimega Manju.

The judge ordered cash bail of Rs. 7,500 and surety bail of Rs. 25,000 on each of the accused, They were ordered to furnish bail on June 21.

They were also fingerprinted. In this case they are accused of illegally confining between September 6, 1990 and September 5, 1991 and also causing the death of Sumithra Sanjeewa Sirimega Manju. State Counsel Vasnatha Perera appeared for the prosecution

Senior Counsel Wijaya Wickramaratne PC appeared for the accused.
