EU resolution on Sri Lanka deferred for third time

A proposed EU resolution against Sri Lanka’s human rights record has been deferred for the third consecutive time, Minister of Human Rights and Disaster Management Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

The EU resolution was expected to be taken up at the UN Human Rights Council sessions which concluded in Geneva on Friday.
During the UN Human Rights Council sessions the Sri Lankan government explained it had taken measures to improve the human rights record and among them were plans to introduce laws to protect witnesses.

The establishment of a Commission of Inquiry and the invitation extended to the International Group of Eminent Persons were among the other measures taken, it was pointed out.
