Committees to keep tabs on new Ministers

The leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has appointed four separate committees to keep the newly appointed Cabinet Ministers and their performance under scrutiny.

The Committees would also monitor actions by the Government taken regarding defence issues and the culture and environment.

Mr. Amarasinghe named the four committees after he briefed the parliamentary group about possible wastage by the ministries.
The committees are headed by JVP members Anura Dissanayaka, Sunil Hadunetti, Bimal Ratnayaka and Piyasri Wijenanayka.

The move by the JVP comes as they begin an islandwide campaign against the government on several issues including the charge that government was working against the mandate given to it at the last elections.

The expanded Cabinet, taking measures that would help separatism and calling for the abrogation of the Cease-Fire Agreement (CFA), which completes five years on February 22nd are among other issues the party will be campaigning against.

The party hopes to distribute two million leaflets islandwide. It will also hold a series of public meetings. Last month the JVP decided to withdraw its support to the Government after refusing to accept Cabinet positions.
