‘Tabu’: Talk of the town

By Kurulu Kariyakarawana

Turning a twist in Colombo's posh night life scene, the former nightclub ‘Tabu’ has been opened in a new dimension, under a new Management, making it the final destination for the club hoppers of the city.

Set in the picturesque background of the Gymkhana sports complex overlooking the CH and FC grounds and swimming pool, in the heart of Colombo's exclusive Colombo-7, 'Tabu' was bought over by a new management couple of months ago.

Speaking to the media, proprietor and the new Managing Director of Tabu, Ajith Fernando explained how the club has been converted into a unique fusion of a lounge, cocktail bar and a night club, making it an exceptionally attractive nightspot for the night revellers of the city.

'Our vision from the day we took it over is to cater to multiple sections of society providing every one of our guests the most comprehensive entertainment experience, along with serving the finest cocktails and food in comparison to any other similar night clubs in the country' he said.

'We aim to create an environment where the elements of beverage, food and music combine to give our guests an experience where they are not left wanting, keeping them satisfied' Mr. Fernando said.

Tabu's Assistant Manager - Operations and world class Bartender Nishantha said previously a premier night spot in the city, Tabu was run down by the former management for reasons best known to them. 'The hardest challenge has been reassuring our guests and changing the stigma that was attached to the Tabu name based on their previous experiences'.

Soon after the new Management bought over the place the entire layout of the club has been changed within five days. Although retaining the existing furniture, the island bar in the middle that used to take up extra space has since been broken down and a beautiful aqua bar with flowing water has been put in.

The DJ Console also relocated to make extra space for seating and facilitating a more engaging and interactive experience for guests and the music. The lounge area has more cooling and has diffused music for a conversation or a romantic tête-à-tête on a busy night.

The night club boasts of three other venues a restaurant, a rooftop beer garden and a poolside café. The rooftop is the ideal place for couples to escape for their own privacy and a beautiful view of the night sky and city lights. The poolside is a Multi-cuisine café serving the best dishes from all over the world, excellent for quiet evenings with family or friends.

The entertainment at Tabu is also world class with frequent theme nights and parties, the preferred destination of all DJ's of Colombo to spend their after hours, the club's in house DJ's being Nishan And Rajive both having played at some of the most popular nightspots in the country and abroad.

Live entertainment with fusion, rock and contemporary bands are also a standard feature, catering to an entire cross-section of society instead of being segmented to interest only a particular type of clientele.
