Independence shield revived

After a lapse of nearly two decades the “Independence Shield” Football tournament had been re-organized in Badulla, which will be played from Monday 22 this year.

Six teams will vie for top honours where the finals will be played on the Independence Day at the Vincent Dias Stadium.

It was well over two decades a quadrangular tournament was played for the Independence Shield were Government Services, Mercantile, Combined schools and the Rest participated. This year Government Services, Nationalised Services, Mercantile (two teams) combined schools and the rest will participate in this tournament. Three Wheel owners too had organized a team this year, which will play as Mercantile second team. - VTR
