Three-way joint venture in Hambantota water project

The project will include the construction of a water treatment plant of a capacity of 15,000 M3 per day and treated water pumping mains of 53 km.

Sri Lankan, Malaysian and Chinese companies have combined to handle a major water project in Hambantota funded by the Asian Development Bank.

The China Geo-Engineering Corporation-Salcon Engineering Berhad-Access Engineering Ltd joint venture was recently awarded the contract for design, construction and completion of Head Works, Raw Water Transmission Main, Treatment Plant and Water Pumping Min for the Hambantota Water Supply Project by the National Water Supply & Drainage Board funded by the ADB.

The project will include the construction of a water treatment plant of a capacity of 15,000 M3 per day and treated water pumping mains of 53 km. The commencement of work is scheduled for January 2007 and is scheduled to be completed by April 2009, according to a press release from Access.

Speaking after the signing of the contract, Hu Jianxin, Managing Director of China Geo-Engineering Corporation (Hong Kong / Sri Lanka) said they were pleased to be associated with Salcon Engineering Berhad of Malaysia and Access Engineering Ltd., of Sri Lanka for this project ‘to combine our expertise in the relevant fields to undertake and successfully complete this important project’.

Rohana Fernando, Director Engineering of Access Engineering Ltd said together they hoped to successfully complete this project which will benefit the majority of the community in the Hambantota District who will receive safe drinking water.

Jaggit Singh, Executive Director of Salcon Engineering Berhad Malaysia said the project would be using the stainless steel Lamella Plate Process Technology for the clarification of the Raw Water”.

China Geo-Engineering Corporation is one of the largest Chinese construction companies who has successfully completed projects in Sri Lanka to the value of over US$ 150 Million in the Water Supply & Drainage sectors. Access Engineering Ltd., is one of the largest construction companies in Sri Lanka and has successfully completed many large scale infrastructure development projects in various sectors while Salcon Engineering Berhad is a public listed company in Malaysia.
