Atapattama : A creation for all season

P.Ranatunge of Havelock Town writes....

Ever since the inauguration of T.V. broadcasting in Sri Lanka in 1979 it is really something worth and deserving to mention about a particular programme which is holding the top most slot of all T.V programmes unchallenged for the last five years continually according to the weekly viewer research ratings carried out by Survey Research Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

The programme titled 'Atapattama' or Octagon which I suppose is to suggest the idea of denominating on all eight directions of the globe is being watched and enjoyed by most T.V. viewers men, women and children of all ages. Many have even turned addicts to Atapattama on Wednesdays evenings on I.T.N. Together with dazzling, informative, educational, cultural, funny, gimmickel and spell bound stunts of human beings and animals on earth, the presenters profile too makes an impressive impact on audiences. Use of unadultrated simple Sinhala Language and flawless delivery of his awards treats the ears of viewers like a cascading waterfall in cool climes to eyes. Adapting lighthearted, funny and witty ways of his own the presenter mesmerizes and glues the audiences to 'Atapattama' sans distractions and deterrent from beginning to the end of programme.

With all the proliferation of teledramas like mushroom all over T.V. channels and heaps of T.V. stuff with violence and obscenity for 'Atapattama' to be leading and outstanding among them all is really amazing and commendable.

Prior to ITN's 'Atapattama' another T.V. programme which still kindles a sense of nostalgia in our minds was the one titled "9.05" telecast over Rupavahini. It too won the hearts and minds of massive audiences in the country, Unfortunately the viewers were utterly disappointed with its sudden and untimely demise when the presenter of the programme left Rupavahani in favour of another channel.

Unencountering such unpalatable interfering prevailing in broadcasting channels I wish 'Attapatama' and its presenter many more happy go lucky days with the blessings of viewers all over the country in the coming new year too.
