Letter to the Sports Editor

School cricket shock

I refer to the above letter by the St joseph's rector in last weeks(12th November 2006) sports pages regarding the shocking conduct of the Mahinda cricket team and the even more deplorable conduct of the two umpires concerned.

We often berate Messrs Hair and Co interpreting rules so narrowly that the cricketers and the public ultimately lose out and here we have a similar case that the umpires seem to have taken leave of their senses.

One could speculate that the officials seem to have gone out of their way to help Mahinda to escape certain defeat and they must be taken to task for that. What bad example we are setting for the children and these sort of things should be nipped in the bud. If a similar situation were to have occured anyway in the world, the umpires would stayed and let St. Joseph's score the 3 runs for victory, in rain, hail or snow!

The Principal of Mahinda should set the example and take the cue and investigate what sort of sportsmen they are breeding at Mahinda and ask the captain the coach and master in charge for an explanation. There is no question the match should be awarded to St Joseph's.

Thank you.

Dear Sports Editor,

As per your article appeared in your news paper on 19th November, 2006 under the caption of Premier Love in the column of Aney is it True with Nam, we wish to inform you that the Panadura Sports club spinner or any of our players were never in and out of the field to the pavilion to be with his girl friend under any circumstances what so ever.

As a responsible print media it is your duty to verify such an incident before you published a false article since it is an insult and humiliation to all members at Panadura Sports Club and its cricketers.

Appreciate if the correction is made accordingly
