Rugby 80 to be kicked off in 2007

By Shamseer Jaleel

The Rugby 80 will make its presence felt when the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) will include in its schedule next year. After the successful tour of Thailand last month the SLRFU is very confident that this game will be a looked forward event in the local rugby calendar.

The brain child of this tournament is none other than the former Trinity “Lion” Dilip Kumar who was also the President of the powerful Australian Rugby Football Union (ARFU).

SLRFU appointed the former Trinitian Mohan Samarakoon to head the project. Mohan speaking to The Sunday Times disclosed that he will be visiting Australia next month and draw up the Rugby 80 itenerar for 2007 with the view that matches-Tournaments will not clash with the Local season. He also said that Col. Saliya Udugama and Tuan Dole would be having a close eye on the Western and Central Province respectively. He summed up by saying that the Chairman of CH & FC rugby Shane Dullewa had already agreed to host the Rugby 80 tournament in 2007.

The game itself will not have many changes except the maximum weight of a player confined to 85 KGS and the average weight of a team will be 1200 KGS.
