By Salma Yusuf

Looking for a job? No matter whether you are just a school leaver or someone already employed below your qualifications, this may well be your golden opportunity.

Just log on to http://careers.edex.lk and file your personal details (Curriculum Vitae). Your preferred job may probably be just a click away.

It's an absolutely 'fee free' service from the organisers of EDEX 2007 – the national higher education and careers EXPO, which will be held from January 19-21, 2007 at BMICH Colombo and from January 23-24, at the Queens Hotel Kandy.

All CV's filled will be referred to a number of private sector and multi-national companies from a diverse range of industries such as banking, finance, services, manufacturing, airlines and business process outsourcing (BPO) etc., who have already confirmed participation at EDEX 2007.

EDEX 2007 will be the 4th exhibition in the series, which was initiated in 2004 and duly endorsed by the Presidential Secretariat, Education Ministry, Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training, Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment. The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce too will continue to be its strategic partner.

With the noble vision of "Empowering the Sri Lankan youth to be globally competitive," EDEX 2007 will showcase the most diverse and a comprehensive range of choices, options and opportunities available both locally and overseas in higher education, vocational training and careers.

In addition to over 200 stalls, EDEX 2007 will also offer a number of value additions for the mutual benefit of participant stallholders and visitors alike.

“EDEX Career Seminars” sponsored by Jobsnet will cover generic topics of relevance to job seekers such as “How to write a CV,” “How to face an interview,” as well as industry-focused presentations. A CEO's forum on the theme “How to empower our youth to be globally competitive,” will be of particular interest.

A large number of Universities and Higher educational institutes from Singapore, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Japan, Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Malaysia have confirmed participation at EDEX 2007. In addition to the “Careers Pavilion,” “Domestic Education Pavilion” and “International Education Pavilion,” a new "Commercial Vendor Pavilion" has been introduced this year offering booksellers, computer vendors and E-learning service providers a rare opportunity to market their products to a highly segmented and focused visitor profile.

In a country where the adult literacy rate is 92.5% and upwards, though Rs. 90 billion of public and private funds is spent on education, most young employment seekers have few or no employable skills.

With the intention of being a catalyst to address some of the related issues, the Royal College union, the alumni of the Royal College Colombo, decided to launch EDEX, an annual education and career fair in 2004.

EDEX soon burgeoned and grew to one of national proportion, and it became an annual event on a nationwide scale. It grew from 65 exhibitors to 200, and from 15,000 visitors to 30,000. Also, the hosting of a twin event in Kandy, ensured even more exposure. Now endorsed by all of the essential authorities, the event is frequented by a broad spectrum of exhibitors and visitors alike.

Royal College Union, the organisers of EDEX 2007, consider this project as their social responsibility commitment for the nation and the Sri Lankan youth. For further details visit www.edex.lk or call 5521497 or 2683100.

EDEX 2007, promises not only to live up to the expectations of its predecessors, but supercede them, with new additions and bigger and better ideas.

With education and employment – two separate entities that are inextricably intertwined, coming under one roof – EDEX has much to offer. And it is an offer you should not ignore!
