Nivard Cabraal new Governor
of the Central Bank
Ajith Nivard Cabraal, as announced recently, is
the new Governor of the Central
Bank of Sri Lanka with his appointment being confirmed by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa last week.
Until then, he was an Advisor to President Mahinda
Rajapaksa on Economic Affairs as well as Secretary to the Ministry
of Plan Implementation.
The President handed over the appointment letter
to the new governor last Thursday. Others present on that occasion
were President’s Advisor A.H.M.Azwar, Minister Hussain Bhaila,
Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana, Minister Sripathi Sooriyarachchi
and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.
Sunil Mendis, the current Governor, tended his
resignation recently – with effect from end June – saying
he wanted to end his term after two years in a three-year job.
Cabraal held the same post as Advisor on Economic
Affairs to the President during his tenure as Prime Minister. Cabraal
was closely associated in the development of the “Mahinda
Chintana” which currently serves as the Policy Framework and
Development Plan of the Government. The Ministry of Plan Implementation
is entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the “Mahinda
Chintana” in the country over the next six years.
He is a Past President of the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Sri Lanka, South Asian Federation of Accountants
and St. Peter’s College Old Boys Union.
