Alleged
threat on Maharaja chief: Mahinda orders probe
A statement from prisoner E.MD.B. Illangaratne was recorded at the
Mahara Prisons on Friday after he confessed that he was contracted
to harm the life of the Maharaja Group chief.
The
CID had obtained an order from the Magistrate to record the statement.
The CID moved to obtain a court order after they recorded a statement
of a person who said that he was aware of the threat to the life
of the Maharaja Organisation head Killi Rajamahendran.
IGP
Chandra Fernando told The Sunday Times yesterday that they were
carrying out an in-depth investigation on the death threat to the
Maharaja chief.
“We
are in the process of recording statements of all those who are
involved. I have directed the DIG of the CID Lionel Gunathilake
to look in to the matter,” he said.
The
Sunday Times learns that the CID also had recorded other statements
of persons who were aware about the threat and that they would be
questioning other persons implicated in the statements.
The
Maharaja chief had personally called the IGP about three weeks ago
and brought the matter up with, but no inquiry was launched into
the allegation.
However, his statement has not been recorded.
Cabinet
spokesman Nimal Siripala de Silva said by Thursday no formal complaint
had been lodged. But on Thursday the person who was aware of the
threat had made a statement to the CID.
“The
President has ordered a high-powered inquiry given the seriousness
of the allegations and the fact that they appeared in the newspapers”,
Mr. de Silva said.
The
inquiry will be headed by DIG CID Lionel Gunatilleke. “Given
the seriousness of the allegations, it is necessary for the government
to ensure an impartial inquiry and take necessary action, if proven
true, without taking into consideration the status of the people
involved”, he said.
