Gramasevakas
to block votes of tsunami dead
The Elections Department will make use of Grama Sevaka Niladharis
for the first time to identify persons at the polling booths at
the upcoming presidential elections in a bid to thwart moves to
impersonate the tsunami dead.
The
Sunday Times learns Gramasevaks will be given access to polling
booths to identify impersonators and ascertain the identity of voters
who have been declared missing in the tsunami.
The
Elections Commissioners department has already prepared a list of
persons killed or declared missing in the tsunami. The Elections
Department is to make a special mark on the 2004 Electoral Register
against the names of the dead or missing victims of the tsunami.
If
a person finds his name under the missing persons or dead category
the voter is able to verify his identity with the Grama Niladhari,
who in turn will validate the voter’s identity.
