Engelbert due in June
He’ll play the song the way it used to be

Universally known as the King of Romance, elegant Engelbert Humperdinck will perform with his 10-piece band and three back-up singers in a one-off glittering concert at Waters Edge on June 11, as part of the launch of the newest golf club in Colombo.

With album sales of around 150 million worldwide, the man who made a fashion statement with his thick sideburns, has included Sri Lanka in his latest 14-gig foray into Southeast and East Asia in June-July this year.

Engelbert is now on tour in southern USA. However, Tina Hirsch, chief executive at Humperdinck headquarters in Sherman Oaks, a Los Angeles suburb, said 'the Hump' was eagerly looking forward to his visit to Colombo.

"As you know, he's never been there, but he's heard so much about the place, having been to Asia several times, and like all others, was touched by the enormous tragedy caused by the tsunami. He's really looking forward to coming there," she told The Sunday Times when contacted by telephone.

"No matter where he performs, Engelbert enjoys a well-earned reputation for giving his all, and Colombo certainly won't miss out on anything," she said. Engelbert fans in Sri Lanka will be over the moon to learn that this performance by their idol is real, after being duped by an unscrupulous 'entrepreneur' back in 1972 when a concert was 'scheduled' at the little Lionel Wendt Theatre -- an unforgettable incident which has made local music fans very sceptical every time there was mention of a performance by a visiting "icon".

Though this gigantic superstar turns 69 on May 2, he has not let age, nor his larger frame slow him down, as witnessed during his most recent Australian tour."My voice is as good as ever, in fact I feel more comfortable with it now," Engelbert told this correspondent prior to another typical performance at the magnificent Star City Casino in Sydney.

This dynamic performer still works as hard as he's ever been, fitting in about 130 sell-out concerts across the world each year. Just last month, he completed a gruelling, but highly successful seven-week tour of Britain and other European countries, and was in Florida and South Carolina this weekend.

An avid golfer, Engelbert will certainly test out the Waters Edge layout before attending to his customary sound check on the afternoon of June 11 in preparation for his rendezvous with his Colombo fans. He flies in from Bangalore on June 10 before heading off to keep his next date in Bangkok, on June 14.
