Holli… holiday!
It’s holiday time, and many are doing whatever works to relax their frazzled nerves. If you are looking around for any ideas, Ishani Ranasinghe has more

Holidays are starting and holidays are ending... For some they are in the middle of their holidays, some have finished it and for some of us the holidays are just weeks away. Holidays are the time to relax and chill out and get ready for the next phase of the hectic year… or is it? People spend their holidays in different ways. While for some it’s about some quiet time and relaxation, others prefer it to be a little more than that. We asked around, and came up with what people love doing during their holidays, and here are the top ten… sorry, I meant nine holiday activities in no particular order.

1. Sleeping… zzzzzzz
Interestingly many people just wanted to lie down and sleep away to glory during their holidays. Many of them admitted to having spent a few of their holidays doing nothing, but sleep, sleep and sleep. “There is a lot of sleep you need to catch up on,” says Shehani with a smile adding that it certainly is not healthy to be sleep deprived. I guess she, along with a few others, will be visiting sleepland this holidays. By the way, good luck to anyone who is planning on coming between her and her sleep time.

2. Movies… we all sure love them
They sure are releasing movies at a rate… Hollywood, Bollywood and even Sri Lanka. There are so many that at times it’s hard to keep track of all the movies that are coming out, especially in Bollywood. While some of these movies can be brushed aside as time wasters, some of them are must -sees. Unfortunately, there is the lack of time for most of us, which means the chances of us getting the chance to watch each and every movie is a bit slim. “This holiday I am going to sit in front of the TV and not move. I really don’t care what happens,” say Nilu and Malik, who are planning to spend their free time watching all the movies they missed. It seems that they are not the only ones who are planning on doing just this. Many people who I asked how they plan to spend their holidays, said they are planning on doing just this. In their books once school starts, it’s back to work, work and a bit more work.

3. Get away from the country
Some of us are lucky… lucky enough to be able to leave the sunny shores – at this time of the year, the rainy shores – of Sri Lanka and head to another land for a short fun-filled holiday. While this is not one of the popular plans for holiday times (for obvious reasons), there are a few people who will be globe trotting this holiday season and to them… bon voyage.

4. Read… some love it, some hate it
Reading is a fascinating thing and can be considered an acquired interest. Some of us just can’t do without books, while some of us avoid them like the plague. Anyway, all the bookworms are planning on spending this holiday season reading away. “When there is school you never really have time to sit down and read a book properly,” says Tehara, who is planning on reading every book she can get her hands on during the holiday.

5. Video games… God’s gift to guys
At least guys see it that way. Give a guy a play station, and he will be happy till it breaks. They can play it non stop without ever venturing outside the room, or having contact with the rest of the world. This sure is the thing what most guys are planning on doing this time for their holidays. “Non stop video games,” says Krishan with glee, while his friends nod in agreement with much enthusiasm.

6. We all love our friends
We love our friends… no doubt about it. While most of us have our closest friends with us in school, some of us are not that lucky, or in the case of people in universities, they are not really in the country. Therefore, usually the holidays are a good time for them to catch up with all their friends, and gossip till their mouths hurt.

7. Studying
A few unfortunate people have their Advanced Level Examinations coming up, meaning they will be spending this holiday studying. “It’s going to be all books for me,” says Ruvini, adding that the books she will be reading won’t be story books. It will be a world of textbooks for these kids.

8. Learn something
It seems some of us are planning on doing something productive this time around. “I know this is going to sound boring, but I am going to learn how to sew,” says Umeshi, adding that she is not the only one doing something like this. It seems most of her friends are going to be spending this holiday learning something or the other, cooking, pottery, whatever that interests them.

9. Partying away
Everyone who is aiming to do this, are more or less people who are having a break from their university life. After months of cramming for assignments, projects, examinations, etc. they can’t wait to unwind, and most of them prefer to dance away all the stress that has accumulated… and what better way to do it.
