By Esther Williams
If you plan on building a dream home or giving your old one a new look, one of Colombo's new stores Centre Point on R.A. De Mel Mawatha offers inspired decorating ideas for contemporary living.

Spread over three floors of 4500 square feet each with a basement car park, the home store set up in collaboration with Hong Kong based 'Sunshine Far East Pvt. Ltd.' is equipped to furnish homes, offices and pantries together with accompanying accessories even if you are decorating on a budget. Simply put, they promise to help you identify how you like to cook, eat, entertain and work, not necessarily in that order.

"We offer a total solution for individual builders, architects and interior decorators - a total package under one roof," explains Centre Point's Chairman/CEO Naresh Butani.

Walk-in customers can also have the option of planning their decor with their in-house interior design specialist, Asitha Perera. "We want to make it easier for the customers," Mr. Butani adds. Centre Point represents various international suppliers such as Logica (Thailand) for office furniture, Hume (Malaysia) for home furnishings and Signature (Malaysia) for kitchens.

The whole of the second floor has been decorated as a model office that enables customers to see for themselves all the possibilities. Elegant furniture, workstations, partitions, desks, conference tables, cubicles and reception area are attractively arranged making optimum use of the space available.

"When a customer walks in he can see a living and breathing office that will help him plan his own space," Director, Ms. Meena Butani explains adding that they would be happy to design the entire layout with furniture requirements, if they were given the plan.

The Home Furniture section on the 1st floor gives you a glimpse of products expertly crafted by Hume - featuring, sofas in leather or fabric finish, dining tables, buffet and Hutch, exquisite glass topped tables and nest of tables. Some of them are made of Malaysian oak of attractive grain, the emphasis again being on the use of high quality material and craftsmanship.

Available in dark sombre colours and light shades these can be complemented with an array of aroma lamps, ornamental jars, lampshades, vases, paintings and wall hangings, used either as accent pieces or simply to add to an atmosphere of subdued elegance in the living spaces.

With rosewood bridge tables, cast iron coffee tables (glass topped) with 2 levels, king, queen and single beds, index spring type mattresses, pillows, rugs, quilts, duvet covers, clothes racks and patterned commode seat covers, the store's buyers have thought of practically everything. Their shoe cabinets are among their fast moving items.

Practical solutions for the modern kitchen are the expertise of Signature whose pantries are displayed on the ground floor. Having opened in March, the Butanis are still in the process of assessing the market, customers' taste and reactions to their available range. They are also working with big developers designing mock up apartments to give potential property buyers an idea of how an apartment can look and how they can design to suit individual tastes.
