Mahanayake unhappy about Norway's silence
By Shane Seneviratne
The Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera told the Norwegian ambassador Hans Brattskar that their silence in the face of the LTTE's alleged murder and mayhem despite the ceasefire agreement cannot be condoned.

The Mahanayake Thera said this when Mr. Brattskar paid a courtesy call last Friday at the Thera's residence. He said those in the south were at a loss to understand why the SLMM was silent in the face of the LTTE's alleged blatant killing of politicians, members of the army intelligence unit and the civilians.

"We admire Norway's role as facilitators but feel that it has not been impartial thus leaving doubts. The LTTE recruites underage children, creats problems by hoisting the Tiger flag in government controlled areas. In the face of these charges Norway has remained silent posing problems to our people", he said

If the existing rules laid down in the peace treaty were insufficient, we need to amend the conditions of the treaty so as to deal effectively when the rules were breached by the LTTE, the Mahanayake Thera added.

"The people of this nation who are Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims want to live peacefully as a people of a single nation. It is only the LTTE who are bent on a separate state”, the Venerable Mahanayake Thero said.

He said it was necessary that the two major parties needed to arrive at a consensus before the government and Mr. Prabhakaran talk to each other.

In response the Norwegian ambassador said, the government of Norway had no legal provision in the conditions of the peace treaty to deal with such a situation. This was a matter for the government and the LTTE. He said that he was happy to meet the Mahanayake in his very first visit.

The Mahanayake said the Cultural Triangle work was not in a satisfactory state. It was 15 years ago that it commenced the restoration of temples and 15 out of 30 temples were restored. He said that restoration work had to be re-started and it did not meet the required standards as the Polonnaruwa Gal Vehera was leaking while the state of the Aukana was no better.
