Vimukthi Ranasinghe slams first ton

Young Vimukthi Ranasinghe of President’s College Rajagiriya had the honour of hitting the first century in the ongoing Under 12 inter-school cricket season when he slammed an unbeaten 102 in their drawn encounter against Sri Sumangala College Panadura.

The youngsters from Rajagiriya, taking first lease of the wicket helped by Vimukthi’s ton and supported by a half century from T. Smaranayake made an imposing score of 217 for 3 wickets before declaring. Samaranayake continuing his form with the bat, put in another fine performance with the ball taking 4 for 24 and had the Sumangalians in trouble. But they held on to end the day on 126 for 9 to force a draw.

Skipper Denham and Janika do it again
St. Peter’s skipper Denham Perera and left arm leg spinner Janika Kannangara combined again to help their side register an easy win over Maris Stella. Denham cracked his third half century making 59 to help his side make a respectable score of 136 for 9 declared.

From there on spinner Janika took over and had the Maris Stella batting in tatters. He bowled a nagging length to bundle them out for just 47. Janika ended with figures six for ten, which took his haul of wickets so far to over 30 in six matches. Looking back at Janika’s performance the youngster has the potential and could be groomed to a top class all rounder of the future.

Easy win for Mahanama
A six wicket haul by P. Peiris laid the foundation to an easy win for Mahanama College Colombo over Thurstan College. Thurstan batting first had no useful contributions from any batsmen and were bundled out for 96. In reply Mahanama helped by two good knocks of 3 and 30 from H. Jayasinghe and C. Rupasinghe ended the day on 134 for 5.

Skipper Dishan grabs seven
A fine bowling performance of seven wickets for nine runs by Dharmapala skipper Dishan Dissanayake enabled his side to record a comfortable win over Sri Jayawardenapura MMV Kotte. Dishan’s feat was done in 12 overs, of which nine were maidens. The Kotte youngsters scored 45 in reply to Dharmapala’s score of 151 that included a 60 and 43 from Gihan and Leelaratne respectively.

Thrilling win for S. de S. Jayasinghe MMV
S. de S. Jayasinghe MMV, Dehiwala pulled off a thrilling six runs win over St Thomas Kotte. S. de S. Jayasinghe MMV sent in to bat first were bowled out for 98 with T. Amarasinghe four for 12 and C. Dharmasena three for 21 doing the damage.

The Thomians too found difficulty in making the scoreboard move and fell short by six runs being bowled out for 92. Hasitha Tharanga four for 32 supported by Viswha Ratnayake (2/7) and Lahiru Chaturanga (2/17) were responsible for defending their team’s low score.

Isipathana beat the umpire and light
Isipathana beat the umpire and light in overcoming President’s College Rajagiriya. The Isipathana juniors were well on course to victory when the umpire offered the light to the batsmen. But the two youngsters brushed aside and opted to play.

Taking first lease of the wicket the Isipathanians were able to make only 97 with Gihan Madusanka taking six for 19. President’s College, Rajagiriya in their turn were bogged down by some accurate bowling from skipper and pacie Shalinda Pathirana and slid to 37 for 6.

But the tailenders could not do anything extraordinary being skittled out for 56. Shalinda ended with figures of four for 12 while Vajiranatha Liyanage and Rajeev Dilshan supported their skipper taking two wickets each.

St Mary’s Chilaw too good for Xavierites
St Mary’s College Chilaw were too good for St Xavier’s College Marawila when they beat them by 39 runs. The Xavierites taking first lease of the wicket were shot out for 49 with D. N. Silva being the wrecker taking four for five. The Marians in reply had no useful contributions but they managed to overcome the Xavierites score making 88.
