78th Clifford Cup Championship
Slimline delivers knock out punch

Slimine Boxing Club Pannala emerged the Clifford Cup Champions for the year 2004 with ease when they outclassed their opponents with the minimum of fuss in all the finals of the 78th Clifford Cup Championship which was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. Slimline secured 30 points with Air Force way behind in second place with 19 points and Army 'A' third with 18 points.

The champion team had five of their boxers in finals of different categories with all of them succeeding while four of them scoring knockouts with the referees being compelled to stop the fights. The best fight of the day was in the Under 51 fly weight category where Slimlines' Ratnayake prevailed in a tense battle over his opponent Rajapakse of Veyangoda BC.

This was the second time that Slimline annexed the title having won it in 2001 when they broke the of 13 years reign of Army. Apart from the winning the title, the champion team had M.D.K. Wanniarachchi being adjudged the best boxer of the meet while J.S.I.W.S. Karunathileke of Air Force was adjudged the best loser.
