Many Lankans go overseas
Walk into the departure lounge of the Colombo airport and apart from tourists, migrant workers, students and business travellers, you find a rapidly growing category: Sri Lankan tourists!

With airlines offering cut-rate tickets to destinations like Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia or Hong Kong, the country's growing upper middle class is grabbing these cheap tickets and affording themselves a holiday at hotels that are often cheaper than those in Sri Lanka.

Pani Seneviratne, with wide experience in local and international tourism who has joined The Sunday Times FT's panel of specialist writers, in an article on Page 4 analysis a relatively new situation of more Sri Lankan tourists going out than foreign tourists coming in.
