President Chandrika Kumaratunga left for Britain un-announced last night, shortly after releasing a taped broadcast to the nation. President Kumaratunga has requested meetings with British leaders, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, but according to reports from London, Mr. Blair's office at Downing Street has yet to agree to a meeting.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw however is expected to meet the President. While in Britain, President Kumaratunga will also take the opportunity to attend the graduation ceremony of her daughter. Presidential spokesman Harim Peiris said he was not in a position to comment whether it was an official or private visit.
