Want to experience abstract sports?
By Ishani Ranasinghe
Abstract Sports Festival is a sporting event with a unique twist. “What we have done is taken normal games and given a bit of a twist to it,” says Co-Project Chairperson Surath Chandrasena. The usual everyday games are made interesting by getting the children to do it differently, for example for the relay they would have to run backwards, hop sideways, etc.

Organised by the Interact Club of Royal College together with the Interact Club of Bishop’s College, this event gives an opportunity for orphaned and differently abled children to indulge in various sports activities and to experience unlimited fun. This year too orphans, street children, speech impaired children from various orphanages and schools such as Kusum Sevana and the School for the Visually Handicapped and Hearing Impaired in Ratmalana are to participate in the event.

At the festival the children will be given the opportunity to enjoy unique abstract games, a magic show, a bouncer and an exceptional amount of food and beverages. “I feel that this is a project that gives these children an opportunity to enjoy themselves,” says Surath. Another highlight of the festival is the concert in which these children will be performing.

The sports festival will consist of two sessions; the morning session for the children and the evening session commencing at 2.00 p.m. featuring events for the Interactors. “We will be giving the Interactors the opportunity to participate in abstract games,” says Surath. The winners of these events will be awarded handmade trophies.

Speaking to us about the reason for organising a project of this nature he explains that for them it is about bringing happiness to the lives of those who are unfortunate and also about doing something worthwhile that would leave a lasting impression on the lives of those children. It is also about keeping the true spirit of the Interact movement alive by striving to make the community a better place to live in. Surath explains that interacting with these kids gives everyone who is a part of this project lasting memories, which they can look back on and be happy about. The sports festival will be held on May 23 at Havelock Grounds from 9.00 a.m. onwards.
