Kingswood crush St. Peter's to grab Golden Key Sevens

Kingswood College clinched the Golden Key Privilege Card trophy with an emphatic 46 points to 5 win over St Peter's in the Schools Seven-a-side final played at the Bogambara Stadium yesterday. The Kingswoodians had almost assured themselves with the the title when they ran up three goals and two tries in the first session of play. They scored five more tries in the second half to put the issue beyond doubt.

St. Anthony's overcame stiff resistance from Science College Mt. Lavinia to take the Plate title defeating them by 24 points to 19 while Thurstan beat Nalanda by 15 points to 10 after the score was ten all after full time to take the Bowl.

Earlier in the day the quarter finals where Kingswood, Wesley, St Peter's and St Sylvester's qualified to the Cup semis defeating Science, Vidyartha, St Anthony's and St Sylvester's respectively while D. S. Senanayake MV, Nalanda, Thurstan and Carey qualified to Bowl semi-finals defeating Zahira, Sri Rahula, Dharmaraja and Matale Combine.

A thrilling encounter was witnessed in the first Cup semi-finals between Kingswood who were having a whale of a time winning all their preliminary games comfortably. The Kingswoodians going in as hot favourites to win this game were given a rude shock by the Wesleyites who went into the lead and struck again to take a 12-0 lead at the breather.

But Kingswood came back with a vengeance to equalise in the second half with two successive tries to end the game on 12 all at the long whistle. The match went into extra time and the side that score first would qualify to the finals and the Kingswoodians made that move. In the other semi-final St Peter's short work of St Sylvester's defeating them by 28 points to five.

The Golden Key Schools Rugby Sevens was sponsored by the Golden Key Credit Card Co Ltd and organised by the Old Boys Union of Kingswood who are celebrating their centenary this year. Sixteen teams participated consisting of nine teams from Colombo, six teams from Kandy and one from Matale.

The chief guest at the closing ceremony was Orville Perera, Assistant General Manager of Golden Key Credit Card Ltd who gave away the trophy plus a cash award of Rs. 50,000/- to the winners while runners up St. Peter's received a cash award of Rs. 25,000. Kingswood skipper Marija Marikar was selected the most valuable player of the tournament.

Quarter Finals:
Bowl - DSS beat Zahira 21-17. Nalanda beat Sri Rahula 34-0. Thurstan beat Dharmaraja 17-5. Carey beat Matale Combine Schools 14-0.

Cup - Kingswood beat Science 47-0. Wesley beat Vidyartha 26-7. St Peter's beat St Snthony's 26-5. St Sylvester's beat Ananda 37-0.
