Royal, Ananda, Visakha schools Hockey Champs

Results of the finals played at the astro turf last sunday

Boys under 13

Royal college beat defending champions Ananda college by 1 goal to nil to clinch the championship. There was no score at the end of full time. The winning goal was scored in the second session of the extra time by the captain and centre forward of Royal - Marlon Senanayaka. Others who excelled for the winners -were centre half Jasintha Senaratne, full back Mohammed Rumy and left half Shaheen Ahmed. For Ananda the skipper and full back Kasun Nagahawatte and centre half Gimal Dias displayed good hockey skills.

Royal had the dsitinct privilege of being the only unbeaten team in the tournourment. They scored 48 goals in the tournament with only a solitary goal scored against them, which is an outstanding record. The champion Royal team was coached by Rohan Dissanayake

In the play off for the 3rd place St.Josephs beat S.Thomas’ Mt.Lavinia 2-1

Most outstanding player: Marlon Senanayake (Royal College)

The best goal keeper: Yasantha Abeysekera (Ananda College)

Most promising player: Ashan Alles (St.Benedicts College)

Most promising goal keeper: Marino Perera (St.Josephs College)

Girls Under 15

Defending Champions Visakha Vidyalaya beat Yasodara Balika 3-0 to retain the trophy. For Visakha, left inside Jayathi Anupama opened scoring in the 10th minute with a powerful strike off a penalty corner. At half time the score was 1-0. In the 7th minute of the second half Visakha increased the lead with a goal by right extreme Harini Gunawardena. The third goal was scored in the 15th minute of the second half by centre forward Dulmini Nanayakkara. Visakha Vidyalaya remained unbeaten in the tournament and have scored a record 54 goals with only two goals scored against them.This too is a proud record for a school team. Visakha Captain Dilakshi Kaumini, right inside Charmalie Waduge and centre half Dilini Udarika were the others who excelled for Visakha while centre forward Nadeesha Nishamalee and captain and centre half Oyala Hayani played well for Yasodara. The Champion Visakha team was coached by Rohan Dissanayake.

In the play off match for the 3rd place - Musaeus Beat Sirimavo 2-0

The Best Goal Keeper: Dinusha Madhushani (Yasodara Balika)

Most Promising Player: Apeksha Weerasekera (Musaeus College)

Most Promising Goal Keeper: Isurika Jayaratne (Sirimavo Balika)

Boys Under 15

Ananda College Beat Isipathana 1-0. The Winning Goal was scored in the 9th minute by Kusal Welaratne off a penalty corner. Isipathana were the runners up last year too.

Ranga Jayartne (centre forward), Kusal Welaratne and C.Pitigala (right half) excelled for Ananda while centre forward M.J.M. Imran and centre half Anura Jayawardena played well for Isipathana.

The Champion Ananda team was coached by Leelananda Ittapana.

In the play off match for the 3rd place - Nalanda beat St.Benedicts 3-1.

Other awards presented (Under 15 - Boys)

Most Outstanding Player: Ranga Wijeratna (Ananda College)

The best goal keeper: Gayan Kumarasinghe (Isipathana Vidyalaya).

Most promising player: Sameera Dilhan (Nalanda College).

Most promising goal keeper: Thusal Rodrigo (St.Benedicts College)

The Marketing Manager Glaxo Smithkline Health Care - Mr.Juragan Majid was the chief guest at the finals and distributed the awards together with the president Colombo Schools Hockey committee and the principal of Visakha Vidyalaya Mrs. R.M.Amarasinghe.

The tournaments were conducted by the Colombo Schools Hockey Committee and sponsored by Glaxo Smithkline consumer health the makers of Glucolin.
