An extended option

Victoria Beckham got it, and every
one raved! And I bet you a few others followed suit. So, why not you? What am I going on about? Something that took the fashion world by storm, hair extensions.

You know the gorgeous hair you dream about? You could have that and you don't need to spend hours and hours in front of the mirror. Better yet you can ditch all that hairspray. Hair extensions makes thin hair thicker, short hair longer and flat hair fuller.

Since its introduction here in Sri Lanka, hair extensions done with natural hair has stirred the interest of some of the fashion conscious people. "I have had a few clients coming in to get it done," says Ramani Fernando.

Explaining the magic behind giving a new lease of life to your hair she says, "Natural hair is weaved in with your hair. In the end it looks just like your own hair." Considering the fact that your hair would grow, the hair extensions need to be redone every three months to stop it from hanging from your natural hair.

Hair extensions may look good, but the price of getting it done using human hair is such that the interest in it has been only lukewarm. Thus, it did not really taken the Sri Lankan fashion scene by storm. It wasn't quite a 'must have'.

Now the good news! With the introduction of another form of hair extension by Ramani Fernando you could have your dream hairstyles. What's really great about it is that it is not that expensive. As for the overall look, make way for the dramatic change.

"The new hair extension method does not use real hair, instead a kind of fibre that looks like real hair," says Ramani. This kind of hair extension should be worn braided, twisted or roped as opposed to having it loose. "This is because it will make it easy to manage, otherwise shampooing your hair will be hard."

Guaranteeing that the extensions will last a few months, she explains that what they do is twist the fibre into the real hair to extend it. It gets better: you can reuse the extensions when you are getting it done for the second time, "this would really cut costs," she adds. The extensions can also be washed and conditioned, "You treat it just as you would your own hair."

Ramani is at present trying out this new method in Sri Lanka. In this special shoot for the Mirror Magazine, she focussed on the Afro Caribbean look. Take a look at our photographs and see for yourself if hair extensions are your kind of thing.

Want to change your hair? You have two options: The real hair extensions or the fibre ones. The difference is in the price. "The natural hair extensions are not that visible," says Ramani adding that the new method is more dramatic. "It's a different look altogether." Remember that this kind of thing should be done by the experts.

As for it becoming a trend, Ramani is confident that hair extensions will catch on. "This will definitely become one of the must-haves this year," she says.

Want to make some heads turn and be totally in sync with fashion? Then hair extensions are your kind of thing. It's about changing a haircut that has gone wrong, changing your look, or better yet, making a statement.
