Two days to go
By Aaysha Cader
It’s a show that promises the best of Bryan Adams. On February 10, 2004, Sri Lankans can rock to the tunes of his hits LIVE as the Canadian superstar makes his way to the country he has described as, “a bit of a party town” as part of an official world tour for 2004.

In an exclusive interview before his launch of the world tour, when asked of any ‘big plans’ for the future, the soft-rock legend is reported to have said, “Haven’t you heard? We’re coming to Sri Lanka! See you there!”

See us here is what he will do, at the Bryan Adams concert presented by Showdiff Worldwide and Rapport Global Events. The gig is facilitated by the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Organizers reveal that 25% of the concert profits will be channelled towards a charity organisation in Sri Lanka.

The concert will be a live presentation, sans backing tracks. Adams is on tour with his official band and a crew comprising almost thirty people. Approximately eight tonnes of technical equipment will be flown to Colombo for the gig. The concert itself is due to last at least a couple of hours, without any local acts.

With two days to go, tickets for the gig have been selling fast, with fans coming down from the Maldives, Singapore and Bangladesh as well. Showdiff Worldwide says that a capacity crowd of approximately 15,000 is expected, adding that they want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event. Four giant screens are being set up at the venue.

Adams himself has said that he hears Sri Lanka is “a good place to play outside”, and organizers reveal that all tickets will be for standing audiences, with double barricades separating the Rs.5000 and Rs.3000 enclosures from the larger area for Rs.1000 ticket-holders. Security is tight for the gig; discussions have been held with police officials and 400 officers will be deployed at the venue.

Adams is due to arrive in Colombo on February 9, after performances in New Delhi and Bangalore the previous two days. He is due to fly for a gig in Dubai on the 11th.

Print media sponsors for the concert are The Sunday Times, the Daily Mirror, Lankadeepa and Hi!! Magazine, with SunFM and GoldFM together with ArTV as official electronic media sponsors. Other sponsors include Jetwing (Official Travel) and Dialog GSM, while the artiste and his entourage will be hosted by The Colombo Plaza and Crescat City Residencies.

With promises to put you on Cloud Number Nine, and tales to tell of First Real Six Strings in the Summer of ‘69, it’s bound to be one rocking show. So make a head start to the CR&FC when gates open at 6.30pm sharp. There’s nowhere else on earth you’d rather be when the gig happens at 8:00pm Tuesday.
Let’s make it a night to remember!
