Wekande Walawwa a film of repute

Much awaited first Sri Lankan Oscar hopeful of Dr. Lester James Peries’, ‘Wekande Walawwa’ (Mansion By the Lake) will be screened in CEL theatres from February 12.

Earlier the film became the first Sri Lankan film which had a general commercial release in France. ‘Wekande Walawwe’ also represented Lanka at the Cannes Film Festival in addition to the other International Film Festivals such as Cairo, Sao Paulo in Brazil, Palm Springs in California and Goteborg in Sweden, which continues its run till February 2.

The story is of Sujata Rajasuriya who returns to Sri Lanka with her daughter Aruni after a long stay in London. Her sister Sita, who manages the family mansion in Sujata’s absence is waiting for them. In the taxi which takes them back home, they dream of rediscovering the happiness they once knew and experienced. But what once was is not there anymore.

Scripted by Somaweera Senanayake the stellar cast in “Wekande Walawwe” is Malani Fonseka, Wasanthi, Chathurani, Irangani Serasinghe, Sanath Gunathilake, Ravindra Randeniya and Paboda Sandeepani.

K. A. Dharmasena handled the cinematography. Gladwin Fernando edited and Sumitra Peries and Mani Mendis handled the art direction and Pradeep Ratnayake did the musical score.

“Wekande Walawwe” is produced by Chandran Ratnam. Lester’s film would be followed by Sumitra Peries’ “Sakman Maluwa”- (The Garden) which had a run of over 65 days at the Regal theatre in Colombo.
