Divisional Secs’ strike over
By Nalaka Nonis
The strike launched by Divisional Secretaries islandwide over the alleged assault of the Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretary by a Kalutara district MP was called off on Friday after the Government promised to meet the demands forwarded by the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Association.

Association President S. Ranuge told The Sunday Times that the two demands - to expedite the legal process against MP Lakshman Wijemanne and appoint a committee to inquire into the matter - were met by the Government.

He said the Attorney General has informed that the case against the MP which was to be called in May will now be taken up on January 14, 2004 in courts and added that the Government had appointed a three-member committee to inquire into the case. He added that though there were problems with regard to the composition and powers of the committee appointed by the Government, the Prime Minister's secretary had promised they would be rectified.

People islandwide were affected by the absence of the Divisional Secretaries while most functions performed by the clerical staff in Divisional Secretariats had been held up as the signatures of the officials were required. Issue of liquor and timber permits and planning and development functions of Divisional Secretariats had also been held up by the absence of the Divisional Secretaries while the accounts of the institutions have to be finalised before December 31.
