Fancied players win their games

The All Island Lanka Plate Snooker tournament conducted by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka (BSASL) got underway yesterday with the matches of the Colombo District being played at the BSASL Headquarters at Reid Avenue.
This tournament is the qualifying stage for the snooker nationals scheduled to be held in 2004 which is played for the late U.W. Sumathipala memorial trophy and sponsored by Jagath Sumathipala of Sumathipala of Sumathi Group of Companies for the fifth successive year.

The tournament is being held in four districts with over 300 players participating. Colombo is having the highest number of entries with 158 players followed by Nuwara Eliya 90, Kandy 74 and Galle 21. The top two players in the four districts will join the main group to battle out in the snooker nationals.

Today's matches will get underway from 11.00 a.m. onwards.

Sharwardi (Moors SC) beat U. Tillekasiri (SLPA) 2-0, A. Jayaratne (YMBA) beat A. Waidyasekera (SSC) 2-0, M. Fawzy (MICH) beat Kelum Gunatileke (CEB) 2-0.
