Controversy over gift packs on wheelchairs
A controversy has arisen over a ceremony arranged for Interior Minister John Amaratunga to donate eight wheelchairs to the Police Hospital to mark his 25th year in politics.

Some 280 gift packs were also given to patients at this ceremony using money from the Police Welfare Society Fund but it is alleged that the impression given was that the gift packs were also from the minister.

Senior DIG (Administraion) S.G. Randeni confirmed that the gift packs were given from the Police Welfare Funds and that the donation of gift packs was arranged to coincide with the minister's ceremony.

Minister Ameratunga told The Sunday Times he eight wheelchairs were entirely from his personal funds and he had not taken a cent from the government money.
