Sujeeva Nilmini Jayasena brought honour to Sri Lanka when she bagged second spot in the 10,000 metres women's event at the 15th Asian Athletic Championships which commenced here yesterday. Thus she was awarded the silver medal amidst a large number of Sri Lankan fans that had come to watch the event.

Thirty-year-old Sujeeva is an assistant sports advisor for schools in the Ratnapura District. This is the first time that she has won a medal in the Asian circuit. This is also the first time that a Sri Lankan girl has won a medal in a long distance event.

Meanwhile in the women's 400 metres Damayanthi Darsha pulled out of the first round race due to an injury. A lot of hope depended on Damayanthi Darsha and officials in the Sri Lanka camp were very disappointed.
