Tillekaratne out
Sugath Tillekaratne was knocked out of the 400 metres event in the first round heats itself when he finished fifth in his heat with a below par performance which even Tillekratne failed to believe.

He timed a pathetic 46.09 seconds even well below his seasonal best of 45.56 seconds and later said he must have committed a terrible mistake but he did not know exactly what went wrong.

"Surely there must have been something wrong in my whole race. But I don't know what was wrong and where I went wrong. It is really unfortunate. I am not tired and still feel fine and in good shape. Conditions are perfect. The start was okay and I know I even ran very well. But I don't know what happened. I am really sad because I surely could have better in today's race" a disappointed Tillekaratne told Sri Lankan media.

However he said that he would give a better performance in the 4X400 metre relay.
He disclosed that the relay team has been finalised. They would comprise of Prasanna Amarasekara, Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Ranga Wimalawansa and Tillekaratne in the running order.

"We are practising hard and I don't see why we could not give a good performance. I promise that I would do better in the relays" Tillekaratne said. (CdeS)

Kandy SC in Clifford Cup rugby final
l Kandy SC 37
l Havelocks 26

By Aubrey Kuruppu
It was oh so close! but Kandy SC seemed to have more gas in the tank and certainly enjoyed a better second half to register a 37 points(2 goals, 5 tries, a drop goal) to 26 (3 goals, 1 try) win over Havelocks at Nittawela yesterday. In so doing, Kandy, the kings of local rugby entered next week's final of the Clifford cup.Trailing 22-26 at the short blast Kandy went ahead after eight minutes when Laga turned his way over off a line out taken near the goal line.

The game stayed this way for much of the second half. Hilmy Saheed made a terrible hash of a 35-yard penalty that would have given the Havies the lead. With time running out, flanker Shaun Wijesinghe put the issue beyond doubt with a try converted by Weerakkody.
