Stone throwing students

A recent experience that my husband and I had prompted me to write this to keep the public informed. It was during the 4th week of July, as we were driving down Baseline Road towards Kirulapone that the incident took place.

Two buses packed with boys aged around 11 were on the parallel lane. Their pastime was throwing stones at the vehicles on the next lane.

A few hit our vehicle as well. It was annoying to many drivers. A windscreen does not come cheap these days.

We managed to overtake the bus, get close to the driver's end and during a brief stop at a traffic light, take down the details of the school. The school was Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya.

Armed with this information, I called the Principal a few days later. The person on the other end said the Principal was busy and he was in charge of administration.

When he wanted to know the reason for my call I told him of the incident. He admitted that the schoolchildren were going on trips these days. However, he wanted to know the number of the bus and before I could comment slammed the phone down.

The purpose of my call was not to make a police entry but to request the school to take some disciplinary action or at least warn students not to behave irresponsibly. We were not in a frame of mind to take down the bus number. If this is the state of the schools and the behaviour of students it explains why our universities are in such a mess.

Over to you Mr. Principal!

Mrs. Adhikari
